Sandunga Mexican Handicraft

The “Sandunga” project originates from a concern for the preservation of artisanal culture in Mexico. The country’s impressive wealth of handmade products represents and contributes in a valuable way to its national identity. Unfortunately however, the unique and laborious work of the craftsmen is undervalued and underpaid. This fact and the general marginalisation of indigenous communities in Mexico result in the gradual loss of a tradition, and are related to the problem of migration to -mainly- the United States. Sandunga’s objective is to contribute to the preservation of artisanal culture in Mexico, buying handicraft products directly from the artisan, paying a fair price and providing ideas for improving design and adapting the products to the taste of the European public. Due to the above and to proudly promote the richness of Mexican culture in Europe, Luz Hernández, founder of Sandunga, started this project as a tribute to her indigenous origins.
