How to make Moldovan Colac

Colac is a traditional braided bread from Moldova, in a form of a ring, always made for special occasions or holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, weddings, baptizing, funerals, festivals. It is a custom symbolizing immortality, prosperity, good luck. It is said that offering and receiving Colac connects the soul of the hosts with an invisible thread to that of the guests.  On each holiday the braided bread has its own significance. For example, on Christmas it is offered to colindătorii – carollers, Colacul being a gift of Christmas which is round, solar, a vegetable sacrifice, a substitute for the divinity to which it was consecrated.
